As a tyke growing up in the teeming ghetto of South Burnaby, B.C., Canada I loved food, well actually to be precise I loved to CONSUME food. It seems there was almost NO foodstuff available that didn’t make my list of acceptable fare. Nevertheless there was one item that was at the top of my list as a child and has managed to remain there to this day. That item is the glorious and succulent donut!
You can imagine my delight when I had the opportunity to plan and DJ/Host the wedding of a couple that shared my affection for those very same circular sensations. As a part of our extensive free planning we lead our clients through the confusing morass of ideas and opinions and present them with a variety of options and alternatives that are guaranteed to work. (We never suggest anything that we haven’t used with success as you only have ONE chance to have a successful wedding)
We make sure that our couples realize that it is often over-kill and a waste of money to have a full dessert buffet provided by their caterer and then top it off with a stunning 4-layer wedding cake. Here is the reality when it comes to wedding cakes … they seldom taste anywhere NEAR as wonderful as they look! Now this is not to say that there aren’t any tasty wedding cakes out there but from our experience they are more often than not VERY dry.
Needless to say we jumped on the idea of a “donut tree” which is the same setup as the tiered cupcake tower. The donuts were supplied by a high-end donut boutique on Main Street in Vancouver called Cartems Dounuterie. Their donuts are handmade from scratch by skilled pastry chefs, without the use of pre-mix, stabilizers or preservatives and come in a variety of inventive and unusual flavour combinations. (We have included pictures of the tower)
It was a huge hit and one of those “you’ll never guess what my friend did at her wedding” elements that are always talked about and often shared on Pinterest after the fact. I’m glad to say that the “donut tower” is still growing in popularity and yet has already inspired something even MORE visually spectacular. Say hello to the hottest new craze … the Donut Wall!
The Donut Wall is exactly what it says … a portable wall festooned with donuts. It’s a similar set-up to the “Flower Wall” that was quite a rage last year but is so much better tasting!
The current trends in wedding/event food service over the last few years have been to incorporate comfort foods into your menu and also to feature interactive food experiences. It’s no wonder that the Donut Wall is quickly becoming all the rage as it scores on both of these trends.
Whatever you do “Donut” forget to add some clever signage with a play on the word donut! lol
Your guests will love to walk over to the wall and stand there in awe as they survey your handiwork. An even better fact is that this is not only an easy D.I.Y. project but also a project that is very easily adaptable to whatever color palette and style you have chosen for your wedding.
